Things to Do in Munich

Just prior to the start of Lent is Fasching (carneval) which is Munich's answer to Mardi Gras. On the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday there is a large parade through the streets with bands, acrobats and floats with brightly dressed people , often throwing sweets into the crowd. This is very popular with families. On Shrove Tuesday the shops close at lunchtime and the city comes together to celebrate in and around the Marienplatz. This is followed a few weeks later by Strong Beer Season (Starkbierzeit). At this time you can try some very strong beer that is brewed to the same recipe that the monks used centuries ago to sustain them through the fasting period.
Spring sees the Spring Fest at the Theresienweise. This is a family festival with fairgrounds and entertainment. You can also visit The Dults or celebrate the Town Festival in mid June.. In summer the main festivals are in the Olympic Park. Tollwood is a music festival attracting stars from all over the world.
Come autumn and it has to be the Oktoberfest. Attracting over 6 million people in 16 days this is the world's biggest beer festival and well worth a visit. People may be surprised to learn that there is also a fun fair on the site which is popular with families. There are 2 large parades through the streets at the beginning of the Oktoberfest where you can see people dressed in traditional Bavarian lederhosen and dirndls and watch the brewery horses go by dressed in their shining livery.
Munich's Christkindlmarkt in Marienplatz is one of the oldest dating back to the 14th century. Delicious Glühwein and Lebkuchen are on sale as well as traditional crafts and gifts. There are many more markets around Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) and a Christkindl tram that takes you around the city.
