Coming to Essing (Essing vacation rentals | Essing travel guide) makes you feel like traveling back in time. This very small town with less than 1000 citizens in lower Bavaria is located in a valley and surrounded by steep mountains and rivers. Lovely half—timbered houses and blooming gardens everywhere complete this idyllic scene of old—fashioned Bavaria. Essing is a hidden place, where you have the chance to spend a peaceful vacation but also can be very active. The surrounding mountains are great for hiking, the rivers are very popular with fishermen and many sights and interesting bigger cities are only a car ride away.
The probably most significant sight in Essing itself is Caste Randeck on a hill just outside the town. This castle was built in the 11th and 12th century and owned by several noble families, kings, robber—knights and convents over time. Unfortunately most of the castle is in ruins today but there is still very much to see and it is even possible to rent this place to have a one—of—a—kind wedding in these medieval surroundings.
Another highlight just outside Essing is the so—called Tatzelwurm, which is a pretty impressive waved wooden bridge and, with a lengths of more than 600 feet, also the longest one in Europe.
Another must-see is the flowstone cave Schulerloch close to Essing. This ancient cave was already used by the Neanderthals as a shelter against cold winters and is an amazing tourist attraction today. The flowstone cave is in such a good condition that is open to visitors almost all year round and special events, like concerts and candlelight dinners, are held here. Essing is also fantastic for doing outdoor sports. Located amidst mountains and forests, there are more than 30 signposted hiking trails and biking routes of various intensity levels.
After a challenging hiking or bicycle tour, it is always great to come back to a place where you can get a hearty dinner. Essing has five restaurants — Gasthof Ehrl, Brauerei—Gashof Schneider, Gasthof Felsenwastlwirt, Ritterschänke Sturm and Hotel Essinger Hof (Hof vacation rentals | Hof travel guide) — where you can enjoy typical Bavarian food and tasty beer for little money. There is also a bakery in town, which sells wonderful cakes to go along with your afternoon coffee.
As a last tip, Essing is actually only a one-hour drive away from Walhalla, which is basically a German hall of fame and one of the most significant sights in the whole country. It was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and built in a neo-classical style in the first half of the 19th century. Today the hall displays plaques and busts of more than 200 famous personalities of German origin, covering more than 2000 years of history.
