Travemünde – Seaside Resort at the Baltic Sea

Founded in 1802, Travemünde (Travemünde vacation rentals | Travemünde travel guide) is one of the oldest seaside resorts in Germany and certainly one of the top destinations if you want to spend a relaxing holiday at the Wadden Sea.
Travemünde is only a small borough of Lübeck (Lübeck vacation rentals | Lübeck travel guide) in Schleswig—Holstein but also Germany’s largest ferry port with destinations to Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Estonia. Every year almost 150,000 tourists come here to enjoy the unique maritime charm of Lübeck's fair daughter

The main attractions of this lovely town naturally are its white, sandy beaches with its characteristical canopied wicker beach chairs as well as the busy port, where you can watch a great variety of ships anchoring and undocking all day long. However, Travemünde still has much more to offer.
The town’s trademark is the Passat
, a four—masted steel barque. Since 1960 it has permanently anchored in Travemünde and is used as a museum, where visitors can hear everything about the ships exciting past and the live of a sailor from old sea dogs.
Another highlight of the town is its lighthouse, which was built in 1539 and is the oldest lighthouse in Germany. Today the tower is not in use anymore but houses a maritime museum, where you can find out anything there is to know about the history of seafaring. From the observation platform more than 100 feet above ground visitors can enjoy an amazing view over the whole coastal area.
At night probably the most interesting place to go is the Casino Travemünde
. The stunning Art Nouveau building was inaugurated as parish house in 1914 and finally re—opened as a casino in 1949. Since then a countless number of world—famous celebrities as well as average tourists and locals have spent unforgettable nights in this swank location.
The allure of Travemünde is this unique combination of relaxation, history and glamour, that just waits for you to be discovered.
