Veitshöchheim is a picture—perfect small town just five miles northwest of Würzburg. Its great location right at the river Main and amidst wonderful Bavarian countryside, quaint historic buildings, an impressive Catholic church as well as several chapels, more than 20 eateries and, most impressive of all, the Veitshöchheim (Veitshöchheim vacation rentals | Veitshöchheim travel guide) Palace make this town so special and certainly worth a visit. And, best of all, because of its relatively small size and closeness to Würzburg (Würzburg vacation rentals | Würzburg travel guide), a popular holiday destination for fans of historic towns with a Baroque flair to them, Veitshöchheim has managed to stay under the radar and is still a hidden gem. Here you have the chance to completely relax for a couple of days, undisturbed by fellow tourists, and really absorb German culture.
The main attraction of Veitshöchheim certainly is its Palace and surrounding court garden, which is known as one of the most stunning Rococo parks in Europe. The palace was built between 1680 and 1682 as a summer residence for Würzburg’s Prince Bishops and enlarged in 1753 by Balthasar Neumann, the leading man of German Baroque and Rococo architecture. The large park around the palace is a magnificent creation filled with lakes and waterworks and populated by over 200 sandstone sculptures of gods, animals and allegorical figures. Veitshöchheim Palace is open to the public from beginning of April until end of October.
Another highly interesting place to visit in Veitshöchheim is the synagogue and neighboring Jewish Museum. The synagogue was built in the first half of the 18th century and then from 1940 on used as fire station. In the 1980s it was finally decided to reconstruct the former synagogue, which was only possible thanks to leftover photographs from 1926 and parts of the old interior, which were found in a hidden cellar. The rebuilt synagogue and a museum, where you learn everything about Judaism and the history of Jews in the area, were in inaugurated in 1994.
Veitshöchheim is not only interesting for history buffs but also a great destination for culinary connoisseurs. This small town has more than 20 restaurants, cafes and pubs — most of them highly recommended.
At restaurant Fischerbärbel right on the Main bank you can enjoy delicious fish dishes and Franconian specialties while overlooking the river. For more information on this homey restaurant in stunning surroundings, please visit www.fischerbaerbel.de.
Another high—class restaurant is Rokoko, which is located in a historic half—timbered house in the town center and specializes in local cuisine. A good reason to visit Franconia is its wine, which the northern part of Bavaria is worldwide known for. To celebrate the great diversity of tasty wines, basically every town in the area has its one wine festival. These wine festivals and similar events are usually merry gatherings in the town or village center, where you can enjoy amazing food and drinks, get acquainted with the locals and listen to live music. In the summer months until early autumn there is at least one of those festivals in the area every weekend.
