Festung Ehrenbreitstein is a fortress on the same-named mountain on the right side of the Rhine River, opposite the town of Koblenz (Koblenz vacation rentals | Koblenz travel guide) in the Rhineland-Palatinate.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1832. It has guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been repeatedly invaded by French troops..

To get to the fortress from Koblenz, take a short ferry ride across the Rhine River from the Koblenz Altstadt. There the fort sits on top of a mountain overlooking the entire area. There is a lift that brings you up the hill to the fort.
