The town of Grainau, located in the southernmost part of Bavaria near famous Garmish-Partenkirchen, offers incredible outdoor and cultural activity options. In addition to hiking the well known Höllentalklamm and Höllental hiking trails, numerous smaller trails and activity options abound.
Grainau is surrounded by beautiful meadows and natural scenery, made even more impressive by the peak of Zugspitze, the tallest mountain in the German Alps, which is visible from the town. Grainau, a town of about 4,000 residents, is also home to Eibsee, an emerald-green lake, as well as Badersee. The town’s mountain location makes it perfect for exploring the region on foot on the many hiking trails, by bike on the scenic cycling roads and trails, as well as swimming or kayaking on the Loisach river. One of the most popular hikes in this region is the Höllentalklamm, an impressive gorge chiseled out of mountain rock.
Grainau knows no bad season. The summer offers a chance to swim, hike, kayak, and bike, while the winter months are perfect for taking to the snow-covered peaks for some skiing. Enjoy the fresh alpine air as you glide down the mountain on skis or a snowboard. Cross-country skiing options are also available, and the kids will enjoy sledding in the snow. For those looking to relax, hop in a horse-drawn sleigh for a romantic view of this alpine wonderland.
In addition to great outdoor sporting activities, cultural festivals and celebrations are sure to entertain. Grainau offers traditional Bavarian celebrations, as well as various concerts and theater performances. Top celebrations to see include Fasching, an exciting annual carnival, as well as the Corpus Christi Procession in May, and the St. John’s Fires that take place in June. During St. John’s Fires the people of the village set up small fires in the mountain rock around the town, creating a chain of lights along the Waxenstein ridge. The Heimatabende and Park Fests also offer cultural evenings displaying local talent.
Grainau makes for a great holiday destination for the whole family, and all year round. Put it on your ‘must see’ list for your next trip to Bavaria.
How to get there: Grainau is located about 100km southwest of Munich. You can reach the town by car and also by public transportation.
