Ramsau is arguably one of the most picturesque Bavarian villages in Germany. Settled in a secluded valley in the Berchtesgaden (Berchtesgaden vacation rentals | Berchtesgaden travel guide) basin, Ramsau offers stunning alpine views and a relaxed atmosphere. Ramsau is home to the famous Mount Watzmann (2713 m), the third highest peak in Germany. The Hochkalter mountains to the south and the Reiteralpe to the west form a border to neighboring Austria. The town also has a beautiful lake, Hintersee, which adds to the incredible natural feeling of the village.

Ramsau was once an important trading stop between Germany and Austria, and became part of Bavaria in the early 1800s. Soon after Ramsau became well known for its beautiful location, winter sporting opportunities, and hunting grounds. Ramsau is a delight to visit all year round. The spring, summer, and autumn seasons offer wonderful hiking trails and lake-side relaxation. The winter offers sledding, skiing, and Nordic walking. The holidays are bustling with activity in Ramsau, as the traditional religious customs are very important and celebrated with excitement. Church services and processions serve to truly celebrate the holiday season in a traditional style. Villagers and tourists alike mingle to take part in the festivities.

The most memorable part of Ramsau, besides the incredible views, is the parish church of Saint Sebastian. This image graces many a postcard of Bavaria. The church was built in 1512 and expanded in 1692 in the baroque style. Its single onion-shaped tower is typical architecture of the region. The church sits next to the river, and the Alps behind it provide a perfect backdrop.

Ramsau is a great stop on any Bavarian tour, offering peaceful relaxation, nature, sporting opportunities, and of course a bit of culture. The village makes a great base for exploring Berchtesgaden National Park, Königssee, Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden (salt works), the Eagle’s Nest, and other area sites.

How to get there: By car Ramsau is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) and 30 minutes from Salzburg.
