Cape Arkona Rügen
Cape Arkona Rügen

Cape Arkona (Cape Arkona vacation rentals | Cape Arkona travel guide) and the lovely villages of Putgarten (Putgarten vacation rentals | Putgarten travel guide) and Vitt are located on Wittow Peninsula on the northern tip of Rügen (Rügen vacation rentals | Rügen travel guide). Besides a 148 ft high (45 meters) chalk cliff line the scenic cape is greeting visitors with two lighthouses, a charming fisher’s village and endless green meadows.

Cape Arkona is accessible from a parking lot outside the lovely village of Putgarten. From the lot visitors can take a tram or surrey to the cape or walk or bike instead.

The first sight on your way towards Cape Arkona is Putgarten, a small village with many beautiful homes, gardens and cobblestone streets that forms the gateway to the cape. Putgarten dates back to the 5th century when the Rani, a West Slavic tribe, founded it along with the construction of a castle named Jaromars. Though most parts of the castle is gone by today due to cliff erosions, visitors still can see parts of the fort next to Cape Arkona’s sighting tower.

Outside Putgarten the trail splits and the landscape is dominated by wide green meadows with thousands of wild flowers during summer. The right trail goes towards lovely Vitt chapel and the charming small fisher’s village Vitt with its many thatched houses. If you are hungry don’t hesitate to try the delicious kipper smoked in a shack at the beach of Vitt. From the fisher’s village you can hike up a stair that brings you to a trail that runs along the cliff line towards Cape Arkona.

The left trail outside Putgarten winds up directly to Cape Arkona with its sighting tower that was built on the former grounds of Jarmars castle and the two lighthouses. Karl-Friedrich Schinkel, a famous Prussian architect in the 19th century, built the lower lighthouse that is nowadays a popular wedding venue.

Visitors can access all three towers to have a jaw-dropping view over the cliff and coastline.
