While you’ll find plenty of casinos in Germany – with more than 50 to choose from – most offer a fairly uniform experience and one quite different from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas. Each of the 16 German states are the actual owners of German casinos, with subcontractors that run them as far as the day-to-day operations, so the market isn’t as wide open as in other areas with different themed casinos to choose from.
Online casino reviews can be a good start as far as selecting casinos in Germany to play at, as most list the games available, operating hours, and other important information. Most major German cities do have casinos so you’ll have plenty of gambling options, with each offering the standard games as far as slots, craps, blackjack, and roulette. Some of the larger casinos also have poker rooms that run daily cash games as well as poker tournaments of various sizes. Berlin (Berlin vacation rentals | Berlin travel guide) and other cities have also hosted major international tournaments including events that are part of the European Poker Tour.
If you’re looking for a more unique gambling experience, drop in on Germany’s oldest casino at Bad Ems (Bad Ems vacation rentals | Bad Ems travel guide) (which dates back to 1720) and the Baden-Baden Casino; both provide the chance to play casino games as well as relax with plenty of time in the spa and soaking up the atmosphere of a historic casino and spa town.
There are some differences among the casinos in Germany to take note of that may be different from what you’re accustomed to. The legal gambling age is 18 in most casinos (although some are 21 and older) and you’ll have to pay for any drinks you order -- although tipping of cocktail waitresses and dealers isn't expected. All German casinos are non-smoking and most open at noon or later. Closing time is 3 AM or earlier, even on weekends.
