The ELBJAZZ festival 2012 is almost upon us! On the weekend of the 25th and 26th of May a great array of bands play in Hamburg’s HafenCity. Visitors can stroll around the harbor area to enjoy the various life acts or even use the provided barges and ferries to sail from stage to stage. Additionally, there is an entertainment program special for kids, you can take part in many fun workshops or visit interesting exhibitions, which tell you more about the history of Hamburg’s harbor area.
During these two days about 50 live acts play in the harbor, ranging from classic jazz to big bands, avant-garde artists to electro—swing musicians and many dj sets. There is a unique mix of new and upcoming artists as well as national and international superstars.
One of the highly anticipated headliners at the ELBJAZZ festival 2012 is the German show star Helge Schneider, who will do a highly anticipated life show with Canadian piano genius Chilly Gonzales. There will also be several female bands, like Katzenjammer, or the jazz singers Viktoria Tolstoy and Elina Duni, as well as jazz rebels Jazzanova and Supersilent, who aim to re-invent jazz for the 21st century. A certain highlight will be the performance of 69—year—old
ethio—azz—maestro Mulatu Astatke. Those among you, who just like to dance and have a fun time, should not miss to attend the sets of one or two of the many big bands, like the NDR Big Band with their charismatic leader Omar Sosa.
The atmosphere at ELBJAZZ certainly is quite different to most other festivals. Many performances take place against the backdrop of Hamburg’s harbor, one of the biggest harbors in Europe. Like in previous years, there will be in— as well as outdoor stages and ELBJAZZ is constantly discovering new interesting locations. The main stage is within the huge Blohm + Voss shipyards, surrounded by hundreds of shipping containers and giant cargo ships. Should you prefer a more intimate location, we advise you to visit the Speicherstadt, where you can enjoy great jazz music in an old theatre.
