Mudflat hiking at low tide
[ source: Wikipedia]
The Wadden Sea is the latest addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List (List vacation rentals | List travel guide) and one of the last remaining natural, large—scale, intertidal ecosystems where natural processes continue to function largely undisturbed. But what is probably more interesting for tourists, it is the perfect destination for every city slicker who longs to spend some days in piece and quiet.
The Wadden Sea comprises the Dutch Wadden Sea Conservation Area and the German Wadden Sea National Parks of Lower Saxony and Schleswig—Holstein. It is a large, rather flat coastal wetland environment, containing extensive tidal mud flats, deeper tidal trenches, sandy shoals, sea—grass meadows, mussel beds, sandbars, mudflats, salt marshes, estuaries, beaches and dunes. Furthermore, it is home to numerous plant and animal species, including various kinds of marine mammals. It is also a breeding and wintering area for up to 12 millions birds per year and therefore a paradise for every bird—watcher.
Each year about ten million people spend their vacation in this area and additionally 30 to 40 million people come for day trips. As the climate there is relatively cold, the Wadden Sea is not the ideal destination for a typical beach holiday with swimming and sunbathing. Instead, the pure air at the Wadden Sea contains a high amount of iodine, which makes it a favored holiday destination for people who suffer from asthma. The most popular activity during those trips of course is the mudflat hiking tour. Tourists are advised not to take these trips into the sea at low tide alone but to join guided tours. First, you have the chance to learn a lot about the unique flora and fauna at the Wadden Sea and second, tourists often get in great danger, when they have walked out too far into the sea and the tide comes in.
