Fairytale Route Germany
[ source: Wikipedia]
The Fairytale Route in Germany is a 600-kilometer thematic travel route that was established in 1975. The route runs from Hanau (Hanau vacation rentals | Hanau travel guide), the birthplace of the Grimm brothers, to Bremen on the North Sea. Tourist stops along the Fairytale Route are pertinent to the Grimms, places where they lived and worked and locations that are linked to specific fairy tales. The maintenance of route is the responsibility of the German Fairy Tale Route Society in Kassel (Kassel vacation rentals | Kassel travel guide). The Society helps to publicize the route and maintains the road signs that mark its course.
The German Fairytale Route runs past several towns connected with the Grimms, such as Hanau, Steinau, Marburg (Marburg vacation rentals | Marburg travel guide), and Kassel. Numerous sites and towns associated with various fairy tales are included along the route, including: Alsfeld (Alsfeld vacation rentals | Alsfeld travel guide), with a site called the House of Little Red Riding Hood; Bad Wildungen (Bad Wildungen vacation rentals | Bad Wildungen travel guide), which has a Snow White Museum; Hamelin (Hamelin vacation rentals | Hamelin travel guide), which is tied to the story of the Pied Piper; and Bremen (Bremen vacation rentals | Bremen travel guide), which was the unachieved destination of the Bremen Town Musicians. Other interesting locations along the German Fairytale Route include: Baunatal (Baunatal vacation rentals | Baunatal travel guide) (the birthplace of one of the women who supplied the Grimms with many of the tales in their collection); the Hoher Meissner Hill (upon which Mother Hulda supposedly lived); Sababurg Castle (often called the Sleeping Beauty Castle); and Bad Oeynhausen (which has a museum dedicated to fairy tales and local legends).
Besides the fairy tale-related sites, a number of picturesque medieval towns are located along the route, such as Muenden, which has a spectacular collection of 700 half- timbered houses, and Alsfeld, which was named a model European community for the conservation of historic buildings. Several UNESCO world heritage sites are also accessible from the Fairytale Route: Phillipsruhe Palace in Hanau; the fountains at Kassel- Wilhelmshoehe; and the Bremen Town Hall.
For those who have the time and are traveling at the right time of year, puppet show festivals and theater performances, open-air theaters, and special fairy tale weeks offer interactive experiences for young and old alike. Also, children will be especially delighted that costumed fairy tale characters will meet them at certain sites along the Fairytale Route. The Fairytale Route is unique among the German thematic routes. If you find that you are more excited by the thought of a Snow White Museum than by yet another medieval city, then this route should be right up your alley.
