Since 1995 every year in July and August the Franconian town Kronach (Kronach vacation rentals | Kronach travel guide) puts on the Faust festival where people form all over the country come to enjoy classic German plays out in the open air.

Although it is called Faust—Festspiele the Kronach festival does not only have plays by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in its repertoire. However, the festival certainly has its focus on classic German play writers – foremost the Holy Trinity Goethe, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Friedrich Schiller. Kronach is a historic and beautiful old town that still has a distinct Middle Ages feel to it. The festival itself takes place on the fortress Rosenberg, which was built in the 13th century. Stepping through the grand portal of this enormous fort takes you right back to the Dark Ages. Rosenberg just is the perfect place to bring German classics, such as Goethe’s Faust I and II back on stage.

The organizers pride themselves on putting on performances, which are comprehensible and enjoyable not only by theater aficionados but everybody who appreciates great entertainment. These plays burst of love, passion, hate and revenge. Sitting outside under the stars at Kronach and watching these long known and unfortunately often forgotten stories come to life is a unique experience. Go and enjoy!
