Five Must-See Places In Freiburg

View from the Schlossberg
[ source: Wikipedia]
Freiburg is built on the edge of the Black Forest. Schlossberg (Castle Mountain in German) is a steep hill that comes down almost into the center of town. There are no more fortifications, but the terraces are still great to visit and give a wonderful view of the city spreading below. The lowest terrace has a great beer garden for the summer called Kastanien Garten. And last but not least, there is an elevator built into the mountain. What is more cool than that?
Freiburg's river is the Dreisam. It flows out of the mountains of the Black Forest and empties into the Rhine well beyond Freiburg. Following it in either direction will land you in the nature, but upstream into Hˆllental (Hell Valley) that leads into the Black Forest is my choice. This is a great place to jog or ride a bike. There are paved tracks for all of the length that I have explored. The banks are a favorite place for students studying in the sun or having grill parties. Freiburg's largest brewery, Ganter, is also on the river.
Beer gardens are nearly synonymous with Germany. Every town has its own breweries. Feierling is one of the smallest in town. The unfiltered Inselhopf beer is brewed in a restaurant building on one side of a pedestrian street. Right across from it is a walled garden shaded by trees which is the beergarden to the brewery. It really doesn't get any fresher than this. Long orange tables fill with patrons as soon as the weather turns warm. A great place to start or finish an evening.
