The Gay Games VIII, the word’s largest sports and cultural event, will be hosted by the city of Cologne (Cologne vacation rentals | Cologne travel guide) in 2010. The Gay Games VIII takes part from 31st July until 7th August 2010. Considering attendance in previous years, about 12,000 participants from 70 countries are expected to converge on Cologne to take part in the games.
The Gay Games have been held every four years in major cities in America, Australia and Europe since 1982. The event is the legacy of Dr. Tom Waddell, a former Olympic athlete, whose goal it was to show the world, that the skills and competitive spirit of gays and lesbians is equal to the rest of humanity. Under the motto
Challenge the games were held in San Francisco for the first time to celebrate the principles of participation, inclusion and personal best. Back then only about 1350 athletes from 12 countries competed in 17 sports. Since then the Gay Games have consistently grown and meanwhile attract tens of thousands of visitors, who watch athletes competing in 37 sports.
At the Gay Games it is not so much about athletic peak performances and winning the Gold Medal but about achieving one’s personal best. Therefore the invitation to actively participate in the Gay Games VIII is open to everyone, regardless your gender, age, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, ethnic background or athletic skill level. If you would like to register for this year's games in Cologne, please visit www.gaygamescologne.com for further information.
