Knockwurst sausages snap. It’s a quality that makes this sausage one of the most popular among Germans.

The Knockwurst Snap

Knockwurst is a mid-range size sausage, composed of ground veal and pork and a tad of fresh garlic, all stuffed into a fresh hog casing. It’s prepared by heating a pan, adding a bit of olive oil and frying the sausage for about 10 minutes. When a person cuts or bites into a knockwurst, a distinctive snap will be heard, signifying that this is a traditional German sausage called a knockwurst. It may be eaten along with potatoes, bread and sauerkraut with a mug of cold draft beer to wash it all down.

The word knock that appears in knockwurst comes from the German word knacken which is a verb that means to crack. This, of course, refers to the loud snap or crackle that is heard when biting into a knockwurst. The word wurst means sausage in German. Combine the two words together and it translates to crack sausage.

Many Germans consider the knockwurst a finger food. The sausages are short and stout with a tight and thick casing that retains all the ingredients inside. This design makes them easy to handle and qualifies the knockwurst as a traditional German finger food.

Knockwurst is Found Everywhere

The knockwurst is one of the most popular sausages in Germany. These sausages can be found everywhere, including street stalls, meat markets, restaurants, food markets and German fairs such as Octoberfest. Street vendors will typically heat the knockwurst sausages on a rotisserie.

Knockwurst sausages are usually made of fresh ground pork and beef. Veal may be used for more expensive varieties of the knockwurst. Besides using garlic in knockwurst, some sausage makers might spice it up with assorted peppers to give the knockwurst a fiery heat.

Tourists in Germany can try knockwurst fresh and smoked. Some Germans claim that the smoked variety has a more refined and interesting flavor. Dipping the knockwurst in a spicy mustard is a traditional way to eat the sausage. In some areas of Germany, a knockwurst may be served on a roll. Adding mayonnaise, mustard and relish is also okay. Bratwurst

This is a grilled beef and pork sausage that’s served with bread and sweet mustard.

Bockwurst

This sausage originated in Frankfurt and looks like a hot dog. It’s made of chopped veal and flavored with paprika.

Landjager

This is a dried sausage that’s made from chopped beef and pork with lard, sugar and spices added.

Weisswurst

This is a traditional southern Germany white sausage made of veal, bacon, lemon, parsley and onion.
