The new home of the Neue Pinakothek, opened in 1981

The art historical path that is displayed in the Alte Pinakothek continues in the Neue Pinakothek art gallery. The second one of the three Pinakotheken in the Kunstareal in Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) focuses on European art of the 18th and 19th century. The gallery offers an overview of European art from Classicism to Art Nouveau and is the home of one of the most important collections of 19th century art in the world.
Its founder was King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who opened the Munich museum in 1853 and had it built to house his privately financed collection of works by contemporary artists. Unfortunately the original building was destroyed during World War II during the bombing of Munich, and the ruins demolished in 1949. The new home of the Neue Pinakothek art gallery, a grand postmodern building, was designed by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca and opened in 1981.
The permanent exhibition of the Neue Pinakothek art gallery consists of more than 400 paintings and 50 sculptures, including an extraordinary collection of masterpieces of Impressionism and Post—Impressionism, such as Vincent van Gogh’s
Sunflowers or Claude Monet’s
The Bridge at Argenteuil. Alternating temporary exhibitions offer an additional outlook on the 19th century.
