Open Air Loreley
[ source: Wikipedia]
Ah, the Rhine River! Where else can you find craggy castles, cascading vineyards, and scenic riverscapes? Did you know that in between wine tastings and historic site viewings you can attend musical performances? The Open Air Loreley venue can provide just the break you need. Located near Sankt Goarshausen, Rheinland-Pfalz, near the famed Lorelei Rock, this open air theater hosts performances during the summer months.
Directed by the architect Heinrich Senf, construction of the Loreley Theater began in 1932 and was completed in 1939. The site for the theater was selected for its association with the heroic German tradition. From its inception, the theater was meant to host large events. It has 4,300 seats and can accommodate 8,000-10,000 standing audience members as well. Until 1968, Open Air Loreley mainly served as a venue for classical dramatic performances, including works by Shakespeare, Goethe, and Schiller. However, since 1976, Open Air Loreley has also been known for its rock and pop music performances, the first of which was given by Genesis. Since that time other major bands and performers, including Die Toten Hosen, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Beach Boys, Dave Matthews Band, REM, and U2, have played this venue.
For those interested in experiencing music under the stars in one of Germany's most scenic locations, here is the 2013 concert schedule:
- Peter Maffay - June 23
- Placido Domingo - June 30
- MUSE - July 12
- Night of the Prog Festival (progressive rock) - July 13-14
- Loreley TATTOO: Military Music Festival on the Rock - August 3
- Unheilig - August 17
- Kastelruther Spatzen - August 24
- PUR - August 31
These performances will take place on Open Air Loreley's main stage, but the original smaller stage also is used for performances. The 2013 schedule for the Events Panorama Terrasse includes:
- Alexander Knappe - May 19
- Celtica - August 2
The Sankt Goarshausen region is a popular tourist destination. Besides the Lorelei Rock and Open Air Loreley, the Rhine in Flames event draws thousands of tourists on the third weekend of September. The large fireworks display is set off from the Katz Castle in Sankt Goarshausen, the Rheinfels Castle in Sankt Goar, and the middle of the Rhine itself.
