The Pinakothek der Moderne art gallery is the third one of the three Pinakotheken in the Kunstareal in Bavaria’s capital Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide) and home of one of the world’s greatest collections of 20th and 21st century art.

Designed by the German architect Stephan Braunfels (Braunfels vacation rentals | Braunfels travel guide), the Munich landmark was inaugurated in September 2002 and invites its visitors to explore and gain new and surprising insights due to its unique open and spacious construction.

This Munich Pinakothek art gallery is divided into four major museums, presenting art, works on paper, architecture and design under one roof. This Munich art collection, the so—called National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art, focuses on art from 1950 onwards, including important works of Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol. Since the early 1990s the museum has collected significant photographic works. This vast collection includes about 1000 works of over 60 world—renowned contemporary artists.

The National Collection of Works on Paper is located on the ground floor of the building and features regularly changing exhibitions with works from the museum’s own holdings as well as works on loan. This impressive collection, which is internationally one of the leading treasure houses of works on paper, features masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci and Henri Matisse among others.

The Museum of Architecture at the Pinakothek der Moderne art gallery shows drawings, blueprints, photographs, models and computer animations about the work of notable architects like Balthasar Neumann (designed the Basilica of the Fourteen Holy Helpers) and Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of Modern architecture.

Finally, the New Collection for Design and Applied Arts was founded in 1925 and today contains the amazing sum of about 60.000 objects of industrial design, graphic design and the arts and crafts. The collection traces the history of modern design from the pioneers of modernism to current developments and puts a spotlight on the most important movements, such as Functionalism, Pop art and Postmodernism.
