The beach resort Prora (Prora vacation rentals | Prora travel guide) features one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Rügen (Rügen vacation rentals | Rügen travel guide). The 3.7-mile (6km) fine sand beach is framed by a large pine forest and runs in between the prestigious seaside resort of Binz (Binz vacation rentals | Binz travel guide) and the Sassnitz (Sassnitz vacation rentals | Sassnitz travel guide) ferry terminal.

Besides its beautiful landscape, Prora on Rügen is known for a massive vacation resort that was supposed to serve as a large recreation facility during the Third Reich. It was built in the late 1930s and should have been used as a 20,000-bed resort in the “Strength of Joy” Nazi mass tourism program. With the start of World War II the construction was stopped since all workers were needed to either service in the military or to build weapons instead.

By today Prora on Rügen is still characterized by the typical bulky Nazi architecture that contains five 6 floor high buildings and stretches over 2.8 miles (4,5 km) in total.

After the war the structure was used as an army base by the soviets and later by the GDR. With the German reunification the ‘Bundeswehr’ took over the complex but abandoned it in the mid 1990’s. A couple of years later parts of the facility that became a listed monument were sold. Today the complex features a hostel and three museums that educate visitors about Germany’s past.

Despite the bulky structure that is practically covered by tall pine trees, Prora on Rügen is popular with beach lovers since the bay is very shallow, has the finest sand on the island, calm waters and a good infrastructure. Besides five parking lots Prora offers a roofed wicker beach chair rental (German beach furniture that protects against wind, rain and if desired sunshine). In addition the beach has beach volleyball courts, lifeguard stations and snack shacks. Also, beach access is free of charge (no visitor’s tax).
