The Rostock Christmas Market at the Baltic Sea is the biggest Christmas market in the North of Germany and certainly also one of the most gorgeous ones. This year it takes place from the 26th of November until the 22nd of December.

The market stretches across most of Rostock’s time—honored Old Town, consists of more than 250 stalls and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. There are not only visitors from North Germany but tourists from close—by Sweden and Denmark, who often take weekend trips to Rostock (Rostock vacation rentals | Rostock travel guide) in early December. So if you would like to spend the coming Christmas season in this lovely town, make your reservations now before all the nice hotels are fully booked.

The Rostock Christmas Market starts with the arrival of Father Christmas, the Fairy Godmother and their retinue, who dock at Rostock’s city harbor and then make their way to Neuer Markt, where the grand opening ceremony traditionally takes place at the center stage at 4pm. Through the duration of the Christmas market you can watch the performance of a unique Christmas fairytale on the stage of the fairytale castle every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

The Rostock Christmas Market offers more than an opportunity to shop for presents in lovely surroundings. Additionally to the various stalls and the musical and theatrical performances on the center stage, there is also a small amusement park set up. It is filled with old—fashioned marry—go—rounds, a giant Ferris wheel from where you can overlook the whole market, various shooting galleries and much more. Here kids can play and have some fun, while parents do their Christmas shopping and later relax with some mulled wine and a delicious piece of Stollen, the typical German Christmas cake.
