Rügen Binz – A beautiful seaside resort in the Baltic Sea
Categories: Family and Kids, Sightseeing, Cultural and History, General Travel Info
The seaside resort of Binz (Binz vacation rentals | Binz travel guide) is one of the most popular destinations on the island of Rügen (Rügen vacation rentals | Rügen travel guide) due to its beautiful seaside architecture, long beach promenade and pier.
In the 19th century the former fishing and farmers village started to develop into a major Baltic seaside resort. First it was a popular bathing spot for guests of the Prince of Putbus (Putbus vacation rentals | Putbus travel guide), who followed the new trend to bath in the Baltic Sea. When the trend became more popular towards the turn of the century more and more visitors came to Rügen and Binz and caused a need for more infrastructure.
With the first visitors Rügen and Binz started building a pier, a beach promenade and spa hotel, the ‘Kurhaus’. With an increasing flow of visitors the village started to erect private guesthouses as accommodations. Those beach villas were built in the filigree resort architecture, a typical style used in European spa towns spas during that time. It contains art nouveau elements, carvings, and fanciful wooden or metal balconies. This architectural style became the brand mark of Baltic beach resorts. Since most of the villas were white colored they earned Binz on Rügen and other Baltic seaside resorts the nickname “white pearls”.
By today many villas are preserved and run as Bed and Breakfasts or vacation rentals. The most beautiful structures and the famous ‘Kurhaus’ are located along the beach promenade. From the long pier that goes off ‘Hauptstraße’, the main shopping street in Binz, you have a scenic view over Rügen’s coastline and Binz.
Besides the beautiful Baltic shore, Binz on Rügen is located at a scenic lake and nature reserve named ‘Schmachter See’. You find it at the other end of ‘Hauptstraße’ and off the tourist trails. The lake developed during an ice age about 14,000 years ago and is nowadays framed by nice trails and a promenade from where you can watch gorgeous sunsets or run, hike and bike.
