Franconia, in the north of Germany’s biggest state Bavaria, is a beautiful and very diverse region, which has much to offer to its visitors. Bamberg (Bamberg vacation rentals | Bamberg travel guide), Germany’s so—called
Little Venice, the historic town Rothenburg (Rothenburg vacation rentals | Rothenburg travel guide), which is known for its all—year—round Christmas market and Bayreuth (Bayreuth vacation rentals | Bayreuth travel guide) with its Richard Wagner festival, are world famous towns, which nobody should miss to see who comes to northern Bavaria. Schwanstetten (Schwanstetten vacation rentals | Schwanstetten travel guide), however, is not one of those must—see places. With a population of less than 8000 people and no particularly interesting sights or attractions, on first sight this town has not much to offer. But, it is only 10 miles outside Nuremberg (Nuremberg vacation rentals | Nuremberg travel guide) and Nuremberg is not only the biggest city in Franconia but also the second most important one in Bavaria, after its capital Munich (Munich vacation rentals | Munich travel guide).
Nuremberg is worth a visit for many reasons. Here you can find the residence and workplace of one of Germany’s most famous artists, Albrecht Dürer, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the biggest natural history museum in Germany, the Church of Our Lady, an impressive Gothic church, the amazing Nuremberg zoo, the world—famous Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) and many other things. To find out about them, please visit our Nuremberg travel guide. Furthermore, the city of Nuremberg hosts a lot of nationally and internationally significant fairs, such as the International Toy Fair every February or the Art Fair Europe, which takes place every autumn. Nuremberg is a highly popular tourist destination and additionally often packed with business people, who attend one of the various fairs all year round. Therefore it is not surprising that nice hotel rooms are often rare and expensive. This is where Schwanstetten comes to play.
Schwanstetten is a lovely small town just outside Nuremberg, where you can stay comfortably in the relaxed atmosphere of a privately run guesthouse for much less money than it would cost you in one of Nuremberg’s many large hotels. Traveling back and forth is no problem, because public transport gets you to Nuremberg’s tube station Frankenstraße within only a few minutes. By staying in Schwanstetten you get the best of both worlds so to speak: during the day you can enjoy the many attractions of the buzzing big city and at night you wind down in the peaceful and quiet small town.
Of course, you don’t even have to go to Nuremberg. Schwanstetten is a place where you can get everything you need for your everyday life. It has a bakery, a butcher, supermarkets and several restaurants catering to all tastes. The Bürger Stub’n is a fine dining restaurant, known for serving traditional Franconian food with a modern touch, and located in a romantic building right by a little lake. At Akropolis you can enjoy homemade Greek food and at Pizzeria Pino in the town center you get the best pizza in the whole area.
As a final tip, every year in July there is a Triathlon in Roth, Schwanstetten’s neighboring town. This sporting mega event attracts competitors and visitors from all over the world and guarantees an unforgettable experience for every sports fan.
