Rantum Beach, Sylt
[ source: Wikipedia]
Sylt (Sylt vacation rentals | Sylt travel guide) belongs to the most beautiful islands in Germany and many visitors have New England’s shore in mind when talking about the largest North Frisian Island. Amongst Sylt’s landmarks are numerous endless beaches that are all located on the West Shore while the Wadden Sea characterizes the East Shore. With so many beautiful beaches around, it is hard to tell which one is the best, but at least you should be able to distinguish between the busy and more remote Sylt beaches:
Starting in the center in Westerland (Westerland vacation rentals | Westerland travel guide), the major tourist town on the island, you have the famous “Brandenburger Strand”. Accordingly all big sports competitions and music events are held on this Sylt beach - pulling the masses. During high season “Brandenburger Strand” is incredibly packed.
You can escape the crowds on the Sylt beaches by walking, biking or driving up north to Wenningstedt. This small village and its beach are popular due to their great infrastructure with restaurants, restrooms, and several lifeguard stations. This Sylt beach is usually less crowded than the shore in Westerland and offers great conditions for kids since the water is shallow and calm. In the North, Wenningstedt beach adjoins the famous red cliff that is located between Wenningstedt and Kampen (Kampen vacation rentals | Kampen travel guide).
Kampen is the high society village on Sylt and known for German celebrities and wannabes. However, the shore is beautiful since the red cliff runs parallel to the beach. The best place to enjoy the magnificent scenery is to lay down at the beach or rent one of the cute roofed wicker beach chairs. Those are available at almost all Sylt beaches and protect you against sun and wind. They accommodate up to two persons, have a foot rest, and a foldable roof.
Further north towards the island’s northern tip follows List, a maritime harbor town and the Ellenbogen, one of the most secluded beaches on Sylt. The Ellenbogen is far off the common tourist trails and embedded in a nature reserve. Only a few marked paths allow access to the beach sections that goes around the shore and are characterized by beautiful dunes. The current can be rough and dangerous but most times you should be able to enjoy a beautiful beach day.
Similar conditions await you south of Westerland. The village of Rantum (Rantum vacation rentals | Rantum travel guide) is located at the narrowest stretch on the island. The west shore features an almost 7 mile long beach with sand dunes that run down to the beautiful harbor village of Hörnum (Hörnum vacation rentals | Hörnum travel guide) while the east shore offers best conditions to walk the Wadden Sea during low tide. Both villages allow dogs on specific beach sections and if you prefer to swim naked you have several nude beaches to choose from. The “Oststrand” in Hörnum is a very safe Sylt beach for kids while experienced swimmers will have fun in the surf at “Weststrand” in Hörnum.
