Sylt (Sylt vacation rentals | Sylt travel guide) is the largest North Frisian Island (39 square miles/~ 100 km2) in Germany and located close to the Danish border. As soon as visitors arrive on the beautiful anchor shaped island they are greeted by over 25 miles (40 km) of beaches, wide tidelands and cute small villages with lovely old Frisian houses.

The island is accessible over the 6.8 miles (11 km) long Hindenburgdamm with a car train from Niebüll (Niebüll vacation rentals | Niebüll travel guide) or with passenger trains from different German cities. Motorists who want to have a hassle free Sylt travel should reserve a spot on the car train in advance to avoid long waiting times on weekends, major holidays or during high season. In addition there is a ferry connection between the Danish island of Rømø and the harbor village List on Sylt.

The biggest town on the island and the center of tourism is Westerland (Westerland vacation rentals | Westerland travel guide). Since the island’s main train station is located here, Westerland is a favorite get away for one-day visitors. The long but busy Brandenburger Beach and the town’s center along Friedrichstraße are in walking distance. Busses are leaving regularly to all other areas on the island from the train station. Besides, Westerland features several bike rentals.

Less busy than Westerland are the remote villages Rantum (Rantum vacation rentals | Rantum travel guide) and Hörnum (Hörnum vacation rentals | Hörnum travel guide) in the South. The rough North Sea in the West and the calm Wadden Sea in the East frame Sylt’s shores and endless beaches. In Rantum both areas are just yards away from each other and you can combine a beach day in the dunes with a hike through the wide tidelands during low tide.

East of Westerland are the five most traditional villages on the island. Most of them consist of lovely old Frisian houses, historic buildings, and many small shops. Their shore is characterized by the Wadden Sea and in Morsum by high cliffs. In particular picturesque Keitum (Keitum vacation rentals | Keitum travel guide) should be on your list during your Sylt travel.

North of Westerland follows Wenningstedt and Kampen (Kampen vacation rentals | Kampen travel guide) that feature popular beaches, in particular because of the beautiful red cliff that runs in-between both towns. Moreover, Kampen is one of the high society spots in Germany with many celebs and wannabes around.

Your Sylt travel will be completed with visiting List, Germany’s most northern town. Coming here you end at a maritime harbor village with two lighthouses and many fish restaurants. Moreover, the village is backed by an amazing nature reserve with high dunes, endless and almost remote beaches.
