The island of Rügen (Rügen vacation rentals | Rügen travel guide) in Germany offers its visitors over 37 miles of beaches. Most of them are long and feature shallow and qualm waters.

The most scenic Rügen beaches are located in front of the prestigious seaside resorts Binz (Binz vacation rentals | Binz travel guide) and Sellin (Sellin vacation rentals | Sellin travel guide). Both resorts are characterized by picturesque resort architecture and have long beach promenades and beautiful piers. Well-developed infrastructures with lifeguards, water sports activities, shopping possibilities, parking lots, and typical German beach furniture (roofed wicker beach chairs) make these beaches very popular. To stretch your legs during a beach day, there is a scenic path along the shore that connects both resorts.

Just a stone throw away in the South you have two additional Rügen beach towns named Baabe and Göhren (Göhren vacation rentals | Göhren travel guide). They merge into each other and, similar to Binz and Sellin, are connected over a promenade that runs along the shore. The beaches of Baabe and Göhren are known for great water quality and shallow and calm waters, which makes them popular with families.

If you like to do some beach hopping you can travel to all four beaches with the historic island train ‘Rasender Roland’ (‘Raging Roland’), whose stations are located close to the beach entrances.

For a more deserted beach experience you have to drive up north towards Juliusruh and even further towards Cape Arkona (Cape Arkona vacation rentals | Cape Arkona travel guide).

On the way is Prora (Prora vacation rentals | Prora travel guide), one of the most beautiful Rügen beaches with over 3.5 miles of finest sand. Along the beach you have five parking lots as well as several lifeguard stations and snack shacks.

Further north follows the bay bar Schaabe with a several miles long beach that runs from Glowe (Glowe vacation rentals | Glowe travel guide) to the village of Juliusruh. Its sand might not be as fine as the beaches in the gorgeous seaside resorts or in Prora but on the other hand the Schaabe is very scenic and oftentimes less crowded than the beach resorts.

To have a beach almost for yourself you have to go to ‘Nordstrand’, which is hidden between the villages Schwarben and Putgarten (Putgarten vacation rentals | Putgarten travel guide) close to the islands northern tip. The access road is inconvenient, only partially paved and you have to overcome a steep stairwell. The effort will be rewarded with unrestricted views over the Baltic Sea and an empty shore.

Since nudists are quite common in Germany and in particular in the eastern regions, it might happen that your beach neighbors prefer to be naked. However, you can try to avoid nudist areas on the beach by not going into zones marked with the name “FKK”.

All listed beaches allow dogs.
