Weingarten - Heilig Blut Umritt
For more than 900 years, the people of Weingarten have venerated the Heilig-Blut-Reliquie (the Holy Blood Relic) in which, according to legend, a drop of Jesus Christ's blood is kept. The Friday after Ascension Day,
Blood Friday, it is carried through Weingarten and its surroundings in one of the world's largest processions of horse riders. Some 3000 horsemen on ornamented horses will take part in this procession, which will take place this year (2012) on the 18th of May.
Stocherkahn Fest - Tübingen (Tübingen vacation rentals | Tübingen travel guide)
The Stocherkahn, a flat boat being propelled with a pole stuck into the flat ground of the Neckar, is a part of Tübingen just as the Neckar itself and the students are. Normally, the boats glide along the river, passing the romantic town of half-timbered houses and such legendary sights as the Hölderlin tower or the Bügeleisen (
Clothes' Iron). Once a year, however, fourty teams fight to win an adventurous competition. To win, a team also needs to have the most beautiful costumes; and the losers are not just greeted with schadenfreude, but also the half liter of cod-liver oil they must each drink.
A little idea: Instead of watching the race from the shores, it is also possible to get a ticket for one of the accompanying boats at the Verkehrsverein (for EUR 20 per person) and watch the race while being almost in its middle. http://tuebingen-info.de/0/individualreisende/oeffentliche-themenfuehrungen/seite-6.html
Wasserprozession Radolfzell (Radolfzell vacation rentals | Radolfzell travel guide)
One of the most beautiful processions on water in Southern Germany takes place on Lake Constance. On a Sunday morning at the end of July, the Catholic believers row their small boats decorated with flowers from Moos to Radolfzell, fulfilling a vow given in the 18th century. Those who get up early enough have a chance of following the procession in one of the accompanying boats.
Schwörfeier - Ulm (Ulm vacation rentals | Ulm travel guide)
One of the longest city festivals of Southern Germany begins with the romantic serenade of lights on Saturday evening, when several thousand lights are set into the Neckar river. The Schwörmontag (Monday of the Vow) is only one of the festival agenda's highlights. There is also the Nabada, a kind of carnival procession on the Neckar, the traditional Bindertanz, a dance only performed every four years, and the typical Jahrmarkt carnival between Ulm and Neu-Ulm>
Markgröningen (Markgröningen vacation rentals | Markgröningen travel guide) - Schäferlauf
This traditional shepherd's run in the Swabian Markgröningen has been taking place for more than 500 years. The course of this race of male and female shepherds goes over a 300 m long stubble field; the winners are crowned as shepherd's king and queen and awarded a valuable breeding sheep.
The origins are rather pragmatic, as the shepherds were supposed to be able to catch sheep that were running away by themselves, on foot. Apart from this competition, which is being held in historical costumes, there is also the traditional shepherd's dance, a colorful parade and a shepherd's market presenting whatever can be produced from lamb and sheep.
