The town Wolfsburg (Wolfsburg vacation rentals | Wolfsburg travel guide) in Lower Saxony may not be on top of the list for people, who consider spending a holiday in Germany, but it certainly is an insider tip for car lovers. Since 1938 Wolfsburg has been the home of the Volkswagen headquarters and meanwhile ten years ago the Autostadt has opened its gates to the public there.
Entering the Volkswagen Autostadt makes you feel like setting foot into a futuristic city. This ultra modern urban center, located next to the main Volkswagen factory, provides an amazing mixture of amusement park, museum and inner city relaxation area. More than 400 architects worked on creating the Autostadt that takes its visitors on a journey into the world of mobility.
One of the main attractions of the Volkswagen Autostadt is the ZeitHaus, which shows an impressive collection of automobile milestones in contemporary surroundings. This museum chronicles the history of the car, starting with a replica of the Benz Patent Motor from 1886, and shows everything from incredible luxuries to necessities for the general public.
Already from miles away you can see the two CarTowers located in the middle of the premises. For most car lovers the highlight of their visit to the Volkswagen Autostadt is exploring these 20 story towers from the inside. A specially constructed panorama elevator takes you up through the center of these towers, where 800 brand new Volkswagens are stored at all times. On top of the buildings the breathtaking view of the Autostadt, the Volskwagen factory and the beautiful countryside around awaits you.
In 2010 the Volkswagen Autostadt celebrates its 10th anniversary, which means the special event calendar is packed this year. However, most important certainly are the Movimentos Festival Weeks, which run from the 29th of April until the 13th of June. The festival programme includes various readings and discussions, international dance and music acts — the definite highlight being a concert of pop legend Sting — and even a stage play.
A day at the Volkswagen Autostadt is an experience you will never forget.
