The surrounding buildings were originally meant for the sole purpose to supply the guests of the rococo garden and chateau. What a better way there is than to start your day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on a boat tour to Würzburg, the regional capital city. You can walk around by yourself, but if it fits in your travel plan we recommend you to join a walking tour through the Old Town and the Residence Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; often called the Castle above all Castles. Those guided tours start every Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m. from the tourist information office at the Falkenhaus, upper market square. The views from the old bridge Alte Mainbrücke are breath taking and include highlights such as the most dominating feature of the city, fortress Marienberg, the pilgrimage church Käppele and the famous vineyards.

Tip: On a warm evening you might like to join the moonlight boat tour, which includes a Franconian buffet and accordion folk music.

Day 4: Franconian Wine tour and tasting

Würzburg is also the capital of the German wine region Franconia and the wine has helped to shape the Franconian way of life. That's maybe the reason why there are so many wine festivals throughout the year. Also popular are the traditional wine bars in this region called Häcker- oder Heckenwirtschaften and wineries, selling their own wine and accompanying small dishes - and in the early autumn season the fresh wine, in this region called Bremser, can be tasted everywhere.

The vast majority of vineyards are located in the district of Lower Franconia, so you are perfectly located in Veitshöchheim to hike on well marked trails right through the vineyards and join a wine tasting at local wine growers premises. As a result of soil and mild climate, very high mineralization Main wines with a spicy taste are produced here. Starting from the typical variety of Silvaner mainly earthy and rather dry wines, which are among the best in Germany, come from this sunny region. Other grapes include Riesling, Pinot Blanc or Pinot Gris.

Day 5: Wine town Erlabrunn

Day 5: Wine town Erlabrunn

Enjoy the beautiful nature along the river Main walking to the nearby small wine town Erlabrunn. Pretty half timbered houses from the 16th and 17th century give it a special flair and you should pay a visit to the Parish Church of St. Andrew. Erlabrunn is surrounded by vineyards with stunning views in the Main valley and hikers or joggers will feel like in a paradise. The town is the starting point of several hiking trails, and the one that leads through the vineyards and the largest black pine forest in Germany is highly recommended! A must visit and the last stop for today is the Käppele, a remarkable pilgrimage chapel in dizzying heights above the town of Erlabrunn.

Day 6: Picturesque Iphofen

Day 6: Picturesque Iphofen

Use your last day to drive southwest to another famous wine town, Iphofen in the district of Kitzingen. With its picturesque and perfectly preserved medieval and baroque Old Town ensemble it is a real tourist attraction. The historic town idyll enchants with its many towers, gates, three churches and impressive fortifications. See the Marienbrunnen at the market place, the magnificent Baroque town hall and take a photo opportunity at the beautiful Rödelseer Gate, the most famous and oldest of the three surviving town gates, considered a pearl among Iphofen famous buildings and also beeing its landmark.

Then take your time in the Knauf-Museum. The magnificent early baroque building, originally built as an inn (1688 - 1693), later housed the Würzburg Amtshof and then the Bavarian bursary. Today it houses the museum - 205 replicas show the highlights of the great museums, such as from the Egyptian Museum in Berlin and the Louvre in Paris. Art spanning four continents and five centuries are beautifully displayed.

The Vinothek Iphofen is located in the original building of the Traufhaus with a barrel vaulted cellar, which was formerly inhabited by the sacristan of the parish church of St. Vitus. Now it houses a unique wine bar as the center of the tourist, cultural and viticultural diversity of Iphofen. About 600 square meters on four levels include the wine presentation, a gallery, the vaulted cellar and a seminar room with the original, intact stucco ceiling.
