The attractive, historic town center of Bad Windsheim invites you to take a closer look. Half timbered houses and churches are lined up on old lanes and squares. Cafes and restaurants, specialized in local and international delicacies, will serve you the best this region has to offer. During extensive restructuring of the market square and connecting streets, architectural treasures of the Middle Ages were found while digging. It was decided to integrate those in the new face of the square in order to give citizens and guests the chance to see those rare findings. The project became the name archaeological window of town history. To the north of the historic town center you will enter the huge Spa Gardens of Bad Windsheim. It stretches on 30 hectare land and is a unique recreational park, with famous Spa-Clinics and in- and outdoor curing facilities.

Today discover the charm of the past with a visit to the Freilandmuseum Bad Windsheim. This open-air museum village stretches on around 40 hectare natural landscape south of Bad Windsheim. Around 100 traditional Central Franconian half timbered houses and farm buildings are sampled in groups throughout the museums ground. Take your time to explore them all, it's worth the time. Local history is perfectly displayed and if not being reassembled here those houses would have been destroyed and lost forever. Worth mentioning are also the crafts people demonstrating their skills. Carpenters and joiner, masons, glazier and forger work here and their knowledge is also required for the establishment and maintenance of the museum. Even a local beer is being produced here and you might like to taste it together with the authentic local cuisine at the pub and beer garden Wirtshaus am Kommunbrauhaus. If you prefer Franconian wine combined with culinary delights you will enjoy a visit to the Weinbergshof, also located on the museums village ground.

In December 2005 the Franken-Therme Bad Windsheim opened its doors. It is located next to the spa garden and covers an area of 18,500 square meters. The Franken-Therme Bad Windsheim essentially consists of 4 areas. Undoubtedly the highlight of the Franken-Therme is the 750 square meters, partially covered, all year round heated salt lake, with a sole concentration similar to the Dead Sea. The thermal bath holds a thermal saltwater pool with a salt concentration between 1.5% and 12%, and temperatures between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius. The sauna area has many attractions both indoors and outdoors, a large sauna park and sauna bar. The wellness oasis offers numerous pampering services such as Soft-Packs, Rasul, Emperor-Bath, Sand-Light-Therapy, Heukraxn, nourishing treatments and massages. For night owls the Franken-Therme offers with Midnight Sauna a very special kind of sauna pleasure. Every 1st Friday of the month you can enjoy these facilities until 1 a.m.. Celsius is the name of the spa restaurant serving delicious snacks and meals in the bistros of the sauna area and wellness oasis, as well as in the beer garden.

Day 6: Herzogenaurach

Day 6: Herzogenaurach

Herzogenaurach is definitely a town worth a visit by anybody coming to Germany. Its historical routes go far beyond the establishment of the Adidas and Puma headquarters. The picturesque Old Town of Herzogenaurach with buildings dating back to the 15th century invites you to a walking tour. Start at the town's Baroque style castle, rebuilt in the early 18th century. Then continue your walk to the medieval market place with its beautiful fountain. The main street is lined with two towers which are the town's landmark. Over centuries the eastern tower was used for example to store the city's money or as the town's prison. Enthusiasts of Roman history and architecture will find the St. Maria Magdalena parish church most interesting since Archaeologists found the fundament of a preceding Roman building beneath it. Some might remember Herzogenaurach from the times when the Herzo-Base was still in operation. On the 4th of August 1992 the installation was officially returned to the German Government and today it is converted into a hotel with excellent facilities. On your last night in Bad Windsheim you might like to visit a typical Franconian wine tavern. Zu den 3 Kronen is located right in the heart of the old town center at the Schüsselmarkt.
