Take a free train ride to Alpirsbach and visit the famous local brewery, part of the monastery. Alpirsbach is located in the upper Kinzig valley, approximately 12 miles south of Freudenstadt. Although it is known because of the local brewery, the town and its districts have much more to offer. Alpirsbach Abbey, Kloster Alpirsbach, was a house of the Catholic Benedictine Order, founded in 1095 and settled by monks from Sankt Blasien in the Schwarzwald. Since the reformation and until today it is in use by the Protestants for various purposes. Nowadays it offers an insight into not one, but two traditional monastery crafts - glassblowing and beer brewing. Special beers produced at the brewery include: Pils, German-Style Pilsener, 4.90% abv., Kloster Dunkel, European-Style Dark/Münchner Dunkel, 5.20% abv., and Martini-Bock, German-Style Strong Doppelbock, 7.00% abv..

Continue your drive to the beautiful historical town of Schiltach. The town of half-timbered houses, rafts men and tanners was mentioned as a parochial village for the first time in 1275. The market place with its half-timbered houses, the Museum am Markt and the Apothecary Museum is well worth seeing and the Trautwein company is the last craft tannery in the Black Forest!

From there, a 20 minutes walk leads you up the footpath to the castle, or use the bus shuttle service from the parking lot to the entrance. Hohenzollern castle was originally constructed in the first part of the 11th century and after complete destruction a second, larger and sturdier castle was constructed in the middle of the 15th century. However, the castle as you will see it today is the third version, constructed by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV between 1846 and 1867, based on the English Neo-Gothic style as well as other castles in the Loire region.
