Day 1: Arrival at Usingen
half timbered house, Usingen
[ source: www.usingen.de]

A perfect vacation apartment awaits you on the edge of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region, about 21 miles north of Frankfurt am Main. Settle in and have a look around the town to find your favorite shops and spots. In the middle of downtown Usingen lies its stately home, the Usinger-Castle and the castle gardens. The town consists of two parts: the upper and the lower town. Symmetrical rows of representative buildings can be seen along the Obergasse. The formerly so-called New Town's heart was shaped by the Hugenotten-Church, which is nowadays the old marketplace of historical Usingen. The Hattsteinweiher near the town is the only bathing lake in the Usinger County. In summer, when the weather is good, it is the center of attraction for many visitors from the Taunus and the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region. In case you are wondering about the various chaffinches displayed in the town, Usingen is known as the chaffinch-town and since its Jubilee Year in 2002, those colorful birds enrich the townscape.

Day 2: Beautiful Bad Nauheim

The world-famous tranquil spa town Bad Nauheim, noted for its salt springs first discovered around 650 BC, is located on the eastern edge of the Taunus mountain range. Not only Elvis Presley, who lived in Bad Nauheim during his time with the US Army in Friedberg, made it famous but also Franklin Delano Roosevelt lived here, as another example. Through the castle gate, next to the former Zehntscheune, which Elvis Presley used in the late fifties for a record cover, you reach the old town center of Bad Nauheim. Its winding alleys contain many lovingly restored half timbered houses. Explore the market square, enjoy a good cup of coffee at one of the numerous sidewalk cafes and don't miss the charm and shops of the Wilhelmstrasse. The oldest tavern of Bad Nauheim is the Pfälzer Hof, an excellent place for maybe a lunch? Take an easy hike and enjoy the views from Bad Nauheim's vineyard, the Johannisberg. Later have a look at the impressive historic mansions, stroll through the lush parks and gardens, breathe in the fresh sea air at the graduation house and discover the idyllic city forest with its natural ponds.

Day 3: Rock-climbing or walking at Eschbacher cliffs

Day 3: Rock-climbing or walking at Eschbacher cliffs

At the north end of Eschbach/Usingen, stands a group of cliffs up to 40 ft high. The cliff's walls are the visible part of a roughly 3.7 miles long quartz duct, which continues across the river Usa Valley into the Usingen town forest. At the southern foot of the cliffs an outdoor stage formerly existed, with parts of it still visible. This location is used during the summer months for very popular concerts. Climbers use the drop-offs of the cliffs for training sessions; especially the south wall is very popular. All climbs are well secured with pitons; climbs are available from level I-VII. It only takes an hour for those who just want to see the cliffs and easily climb up the north cliff. Two well marked trails with a length of 2.5 and 4.5 miles start and end at the parking place and give you an opportunity to discover the beautiful nature of this area. In the evening, if you fancy a nice dinner out, try the traditional restaurant Herrnmühle in Usingen. Depending on the season they offer, besides their standard local dishes, a yummy variety of fish and game specialties.

Day 4: Bad Homburg vor der Höhe

Today visit nearby Bad Homburg, another world famous spa town at the foothills of the Taunus mountain range. If you come on a Tuesday or Friday you will have the chance to visit the local fresh market, held on the old Market Place, right in the heart of the town. Since over 100 years the market is home here and especially charming with the backdrop of the magnificent half timbered houses that line two sides of the Market Place.

The healing power of the medicinal springs was even known in the Far East, in Siam, modern days Thailand. The Siamese King Chulalongkorn was a much beloved monarch in his country. In 1907 he sought and found recovery in Bad Homburg. To show his gratitude he gave the city a temple. With this, he had laid the cornerstone for the especially close relationship between Thailand and Bad Homburg, a relationship expressed through repeated visits by members of the Thai royal family and in annual commemorative celebrations at the Thai Sala.

The English landscape garden covers 44 hectares and features many old trees of local stock as well as exotic Asian and North American varieties - Bad Homburg's Kurpark is one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany. At the center of the Kurpark lies the Brunnenallee, a wide avenue lined with chestnut trees. Along this avenue you find most of Bad Homburg's medicinal springs, as well as the historic Kaiser-Wilhelms-Bad and the Brunnensälchen, which houses the Bad Homburg casino.

The story of the casino started with the French twin brothers Louis and Francois Blanc, who opened it in 1841. It was this fact, together with the millions invested by the Blancs in the spa, which secured Homburg's rise to fame as a world-renowned spa. The many famous visitors from among European nobility and moneyed aristocracy, poets, philosophers and revolutionaries, included the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who lost a fortune in Homburg and found the idea for his novel The Gambler.

Day 6: Bird-castle Weilrod, a unique park not only for parrots

[ source: www.vogelburg.de]

Vogelburg, a public park for birds lies in the midst of the reservation area Hochtaunus, at an altitude of 1,400 ft. It is a very special bird park, loved by young and old. It owes its existence and permanent further development since 1981 to the initiative of a bird amateur who, according to family tradition, has been caring for parrots for decades already. In the course of time this park has developed into homes for parrots which have been handed in for various reasons by their former owners.

A unique variety of tame parrots, paths with information boards and a multitude of colorful flowers make your stay an unforgettable experience. Thousands of tons of natural stone are constructed to form a castle-like building which houses innumerable macaws, cockatoos and Amazons. Here they can live in freedom without physical and psychic strains. A lot of birds are so tame that they can be stroked or sit on fingers or shoulders. They like being given bird food and surprise you with their speaking and climbing in an acrobatic way. They can be kept in the open only because they have a strong relationship to this place, the way the birds are kept is appropriate and they have found a suitable social partner. You can enjoy a whole day here, with a restaurant catering for an outside cafe. They offer barbecued meats, delicious salads, different tasty cakes and hot and cold drinks - you and your kids will love this day!
