Permanent exhibitions about Prehistory, Roman and Early Medieval Periods can be found in the Palace of the Prince electors. It offers the visitor a broad overview of the Pre- and Early History of Europe from the Neolithic to the Early Medieval Period, preserved and displayed through archaeological evidence.
The Römisch-Germanische Zentralmuseum enjoys an outstanding reputation in Germany and beyond. Contributions to this reputation included the preservation of the remains of the South Tirolian ice man
, the restoration of a Peruvian tomb, and even the organization of field studies in Xian, China, where experts from Mainz examined important ore findings. Visitors can expect a significant range of spectacular findings, which strikingly bridge the gap between the Stone Age and the Middle Ages, in the North West wing of the Kurfürstlichen Schloss. The Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum is both a research institute and museum of archaeology. Its spectrum of studies extends from the Stone Age, 2.5 million years ago, to Medieval Times. Collections and exhibitions serve as a window into the archaeological investigations.
Hours/Prices: Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 6pm. Admission is free although an audio tour is 2 euro;.
