Emmerthal Travel Tip:
Hämelschenburg Castle
Hämelschenburg Castle
Hämelschenburg Castle, an almost fully preserved Renaissance complex, is regarded as the key work of the Weser Renaissance and one of Germany's most important cultural monuments. Hämelschenburg combines all the attributes of a magnificent castle: an imposing triple-wing construction with moats, a fortified access bridge and two impressive octagonal towers housing the staircases. Its most striking features are the elaborately decorated gabled dormers which are clearly visible from afar. This medieval castle went on to become one of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the region. It was built of Weser sandstone, which was much sought-after at the time. The castle was barely touched during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). That is what makes this feudal estate so charming: with its service quarters, an old mill, gardens and the church with its elaborate Renaissance decoration, it is set within a complex that has survived the centuries almost completely unscathed. There have been some architectural changes and renovations, but only since the 19th century, and these do not compromise the magnificence of the overall complex. The castle museum, which was opened in 1973, reflects an exciting history spanning more than half a millennium.
