Lörrach Travel Tip:
Rötteln Castle
Rötteln Castle, view from the keep over the inner ward
Rötteln Castle is one of largest, most important and best-preserved castle ruins in southern Baden. Built by the barons of Rötteln in the 13th century, the castle came into the possession of the margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg in 1316. They then expanded the complex to the size it has today. In 1678 French troops destroyed the castle during the Dutch War of Succession. As a ruins it was the object of monument preservation in the 19th century. Since that time the former fortress has been a popular destination for excursions. A museum provides fascinating insights into the castle's history.
