Eutin Castle

Eutin Castle is the cultural center and nucleus of the town and, together with Gottorf and Glücksburg Castles, belongs to the most important courtly secular buildings in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The four-winged palace originated from a medieval castle and was expanded over several centuries into a Residence. The castle originally belonged to the Lübeck prince-bishops; later it became the summer residence of the Dukes of Oldenburg. The castle was regularly occupied until the 20th century and most of the interior has survived to the present-day. The rooms of the former ducal residential castle that are now used as a museum are provided with original furnishings: furniture, paintings and craftwork from the times of the late Baroque, Regence and Classicism. Impressive items are, for instance, large model ships. These were once presents from the Russian Czars who were related to the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. The once splendid garden, which resembled that of Versailles, was altered to an English garden at the end of the 18th century; this is the venue for the Eutin festivals.
Hours: June - August guided tours daily at 11 am, 12, 1, 2, 3, and 4pm. March -early June and late August - October guided tours daily at 12 , 2, and 3pm.
