Harry Truman's Villa, Potsdam-Babelsberg
A stroll through New Babelsberg reveals great architecture, glamour, and history in this exclusive residential quarter. At the end of the 19th century, it was rich Berliners seeking restfulness and nature beyond the metropolis who settled here along the banks of the Griebnitzsee lake. Their mansions were built by the likes of Mies van der Rohe, Hermann Muthesius, and other famous architects. A variety of styles of architecture from the turn of the 19th century and earlier eras are gathered together here. In the 1920s and 1930s, many film stars settled in the Neubabelsberg villas as they were so close to the Babelsberg film studios. This included, for example, Heinz Rühmann, Brigitte Horney, and Marika Rökk. The quarter was at the center of the world's attention in the summer of 1945, when the Allies' heads of state, Harry S.
