Husarenkrapfen are shortcrust cookies with red jam which are traditional German Christmas bakeries. Easy to make and delicious.

Krapfen are a typical German recipe and are round fritters of risen pastry filled with jam or cream and sprinkled with icing sugar. The term comes from the old German “krafo” and in fact means fritter.

Ingredients:

  • 150 g butter, softened
  • 65 g sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 160 g flour
  • 100 g jam, strawberry or cherry

Procedure:

Beat butter with sugar and vanilla sugar until fluffy. Stir in the egg yolks. Add the flour and knead quickly into a smooth dough. In clear plastic wrap, let rest in a cool place for about 30 min.

Form little balls, a bit larger in size than big marbles, from the dough. Press a slight hollow into the middle of each of those dough balls (using a wooden spoon handle) and fill with jam.

Brush the edge with a little cream and egg yolk.

Place the Husarenkrapfen on a baking sheet, with some distance between them (they will still rise a bit). Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
